"The Financial Dating® Wealth System"
9 Building Blocks to a More Prosperous Marriage
And Financial Life
Part Two
If you’re looking for a way to create more prosperity and partnership in your marriage, The Financial Dating Wealth System is a 9-step process you can use to get there. The 9 easy-to-do steps I describe below will help you build a secure, rewarding and prosperous relationship with your spouse, that with commitment, action and persistence, will become your lifelong path to financial and relationship success.
I’ve used the metaphor of house-building to describe what it’s like to follow the 9 steps on this path to show you how you can build your financial house. That’s because this process, like that of building a house will make a huge difference in your life, and will feel like shelter for you and your partner. It’s a lot of work, but very doable, and can be done by following the steps listed below. If you missed the first part of this article (steps 1 - 4 ) click here to read it now.
Step 5 Exterior Finishing: Paying off That Debt!
Every successful couple needs to have a detailed plan for when and how they will get rid of debt. Many couples rely on credit cards or loans to make up their paycheck difference. As a result they end up living a more costly lifestyle that can’t be supported by their current level of income. Using debt is equivalent to building a house that looks like a mansion on the exterior, but on the inside the framework is rotten and the foundation is cracked.
Many people look great on the outside, but are financially sick inside. David Bach, author of The Automatic Millionaire refers to this as the “big hat, no cattle” syndrome. Debt is easy to acquire but hard to get rid of—doing so requires courage, self-awareness, behavior change and commitment. Create a plan to pay off your debt and consolidate and pay off back-taxes and credit card debt, and get rid of debt for good.
Step 6 Doors & Windows: Being Accountable
Just like a house has a front door, back door and garage door, each serving different purposes and opening to different views and locations, your financial house should have a variety of doors to serve different purposes and get you to different places. It’s essential to understand the various accounts you need, to open the doors to financial success. You’ll need an emergency account, vacation, dream and fun accounts, and retirement accounts. You’ll learn where to invest your money for each different kind of account and how to start putting money into each account.
Step 7 Insulation: Protecting Yourself & Your Money
Just like insulation protects your house from the cold and the heat, insurance is the insulation that will protect your financial house from risk and extremes. It’s essential that you create security by making sure you have adequate health, home and car insurance as well as deciding if you need disability, long-term health care and life insurance. You’ll also need to create a plan for money left behind by working with financial professionals and learning about wills and trusts.
Step 8 Interior Finishing & Moving In: Living & Loving Richly
After finishing the interior of your house, installing lights, cleaning and painting, you’re ready to move in! How exciting! You can finally enjoy your new house. Now that you’ve gone through many stages of building your home, you can take the time to sit back and reflect on how you can live and love richly. Consider how you spend your time and if you are living your values. Do you have time to spend with your partner, or your family, or are you busy working hard to just make a living? When you live and love richly your financial house truly does become a home.
Remember, “living richly” isn’t about the kind of car we drive, the house we live in or even the clothes we wear. It’s about authentically living our values–it’s about the lives we’ve touched and the memories we leave behind.
Step 9 Home Maintenance: Maintaining your Financial Health
You can build the most beautiful financial home and if you don’t maintain it properly, it will fall apart over time. It’s important to inspect your house and see what kind of financial repairs need to be made. Learn the essential and fun things you can do with your partner to maintain your financial home, like having annual retreats to review your goals and evaluate your past successes and where you’re headed. This will keep you on track and ensure that you have a lifetime of money and marriage success.
